What is the psychology behind the desire to tattoo?

Tattoos are painful, a bit risky, and more or less permanent, I suspect that there is some kind of uncertainty and / or seeking attention of psychology at work. What are your thoughts?

It is a question of identification with a tribal mentality. Tattoo's have been with us forever it seems. Now it's a fad to extremes. It's cheaper and more efficient than in the past and culture in society, opened the doors for women as well. Although the art is very popular today I can not see it happening for over a decade before the novelty of all wear. Too bad for those who score the flesh in those days. Many of them will regret it in their older years and some will pay a lot of money to get rid of them. The problem is that the red ink used in tattooing can not be eradicated without the meat off. The rest of the laser paints can be cleaned.
