What is a good way to add a personal touch to a dragon tattoo?

I'm thinking of getting a tattoo of a dragon (Japanese style) the months coming up my side. I'm horrible at drawing, so I'll just see what the artist appears with tattoo. But I would like to add a personal touch to it, something I did myself. Does anyone have any suggestions? [I was thinking about maybe writing a Japanese kanji in my own hand and then having them add that with the dragon, but upon closer examination, which only seems to be a little tacked on.]
