If I have a tattoo Tattoo Design based off of someone, I thank them or not tell them?

I just got my first tattoo done today! The tattoo is an outline of a fox with the head, body and two tails. The main idea branched out that I was a simple Tattoo Design on someone did DEVIANTART.com. I want to thank them and let them feel proud. But it would be unwise to tell them that I used (and tweaked) a drawing you made? Thank you. ps my tattooist told me today that is a common misconception that you have to have legal rights to certain tattoos. He also said that he tattooed the logo of Harley, is also his art (interpretation) and sauces without breaking the copyright laws.

It's really up to you. Even if they are crazy, who cares? It is now in your body and can not do anything about it. Do not copy it directly from you "tweaked it". There it is a new creation and they can not sue or anything about it.
