In 1901, the 21 year-old William S. Harley had created the design of an engine that is designed to fit into a conventional bicycle. Two years later, William together with his friend Arthur Davidson started and developed a single-cylinder engine that was installed on a conventional bicycle during that time. However, this motorized bicycle, was unable climbing through Milwaukee hills without pedal assistance. Harley Davidson and its engines developed after this experience.
Immediately, they created a larger engine (405 cc or 24.74 centimeters cubic), which was to become the first real Harley-Davidson. Meanwhile, the first Harley-Davidson factory was in 10 x 15-foot wooden shed. The two friends were helped by Arthur's older brother Walter.
After a year, Harley-Davidson has entered its first motorcycle race in Milwaukee.
The first years came so quickly to the company after 3 years, the production of Harley-Davidson was transferred on Chestnut Street (which was later to Juneau Avenue). This is still a Harley-Davidson headquarters up to this time.
In 1907, William graduated in mechanical engineering at University of Wisconsin. This helped them to the development of Harley-Davidson engines better in the future. The same year also provided them an expansion of the plant much needed to the increasing demands of the motorcycle. The year 1907 introduced the 45-degree V-Twin engine, which became the only Harley-Davidson engine for a very long time.
Over the years, the company has gained so much popularity that was converted into revenue production. During World War II, Harley-Davidson was hired to provide more than 20,000 units for military use. The history of World War II was the same for the company. They produced thousands and thousands of motorcycle.
Before the entry of the 70Â's, MFA or the American machine and Foundry bought Harley-Davidson. Policies had changed, which resulted in the labor strike and substandard bikes. The popularity and reputation the company was severely damaged.
In the 80Â's, was sold to a group of investors headed by Willie G. Davidson, Vaughn Beals. The innovations of such as the introduction of Sturgis. "Customers started coming back and the company had seen clearer promise.
