The Celtics do not keep much, if any, the recorded history of tattoos, so the meaning is rather vague, but it's generally thought that can symbolize the end or beginning, a life cycle that never stops, or a magical charm to avoid mishaps, illness or anything else that may interfere with a peaceful, happy life.
